Uber's Chief Technology Officer, Praveen Neppalli Naga, has highlighted a significant change in the company's engineering landscape, with 95% of engineers now regularly utilizing AI tools. This widespread adoption is redefining the core responsibilities of engineers. Instead of meticulously writing every line of code, their focus is transitioning towards architecting complex systems and overseeing the code produced by AI. Naga emphasizes that this evolution is a positive development, indicating an 'upgrade' in the engineering profession. Uber's internal AI coding agent is remarkably productive, generating approximately 1,800 code changes each week, which are subsequently reviewed and approved by human engineers. This points to a shift where engineers are delegating entire tasks to AI, rather than just using it for suggestions. Around 84% of AI users at Uber are engaging in these agent-style workflows. The adoption of AI tools like Claude Code within Uber has seen rapid growth, nearly doubling its usage from 32% to 63% in just two months. Furthermore, AI is now responsible for generating about 70% of the committed code even within traditional Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Naga noted that this transformation wasn't a top-down mandate but largely organic, driven by engineers independently experimenting with AI.
