AI agents in Indian classrooms: What educators need to know now

At the India Today Education Conclave 2026, Professor Kamal Bijlani from Amrita University presented a compelling vision for integrating AI voice agents into Indian society. His demonstration focused on practical applications, moving beyond theoretical discussions of artificial intelligence. Bijlani illustrated how these AI agents could revolutionize critical sectors such as healthcare and, more significantly, education, by offering accessible support for students and streamlining administrative processes. The presentation underscored the urgent need for such technological advancements given India's large student body of over 20 crore, where current counsellor-to-student ratios fall far short of national policy recommendations. He pointed out that many eligible students miss out on scholarships and career opportunities due to a lack of awareness and guidance. AI agents, as demonstrated, could bridge these gaps by providing timely information and personalized assistance in various Indian languages. This approach promises to level up educational experiences, making vital resources more readily available to a broader demographic.
